Around the turn of this century, the new Hydrangea paniculata Sweet Summer (‘bokrathirteen’) came to exist as the result of a breeding program with the aim to have rich flowering paniculata’s that have compact flower plumes on strong stems and a long flowering period.
After a selection was made for the landscape market ( which is the core business of Boot&Co Boomkwekerijen BV) trials were held with the best new seedlings for the pot- and containermarket. Number 3003-13 turned out to be the best in appearance and growing conditions. Meanwile there is no doubt about it.
The long, rich flowering period in which the flowers change colours from green to white and pink make summer indeed a time to look forward to. Also in terms of its growing conditions it’s a delightful plant to work with. It propagates, grows and branches easily and it flowers rich on first-year wood.
The flowering period with an early or late cutback is easy to control. I predict a sunny future with this Sweet Summer and I wish everyone a lot of gardening fun!
