Weigela florida 'Wings of Fire' is created from an experiment. From curiosity I have collected seed of a mutation of Weigelia florida 'Caricature', which is a mutation of Weigelia florida 'Nana Variegata'. The seedlings were very different, some were caricatures.
After 2 selection rounds: Weigela florida ‘Wings of Fire’ has been selected as the best.
The color of the leaves is really striking. The first shoots are green and very fast it get’s a bronze shade which becoming darker into the summer. In August it is reddish & September / October the leaves are beautiful wine-red.
The ‘Wings of Fire’ is not getting tall ca. 1,5 m (=6ft) in 4 years. Because of that the variety can be used in the background of the border.
The ‘Wings of Fire’ fits perfect in an ornamental tub on the terrace. The winter hardiness is USDA Zone 5-10 so you can leave the Wings of Fire outside during wintertime.
Also for landscaping it can be used, where the color will attract every eye.
All with all, this is a winner!
